Course Description: For registration purposes, undergraduates enrolling in the Marine Conservation Summer Institute will enroll in both of the following two courses:
Graduate Course #: Environ 746A
Environ 346A/Pubpol 246A Marine Conservation Policy � a Practicum. (SS, EI) Immersion in marine conservation policy. Basic tools of marine conserv policy for 21st Century society intertwined w/two week-long, current issue modules. Hands-on, team-based, experiential learning w/meaningful faculty-student engagement. Phenomena affecting maintenance and loss of biodiversity (climate change, habitat destruction); key concepts of social science and law for instituting conserv policy; unique capstone-position papers and stakeholder negotiation highlighting ecological, economic, cultural, and institutional complexity associated with negotiating priorities stakeholders have for public trust resources. (Given at Beaufort.) Prereqs Biology 202L, suggested policy, or instructor consent. Concurrent enrollment required in Environ 384A/Biology 384A.
Environ 384A/Biology 384A Marine Conservation Biology � a Practicum. (NS,STS). Immersion in marine conservation biology. Basic tools of marine conserv bio for 21st Century society and �anthropocene� epoch intertwined w/two week-long current issue modules. Phenomena affecting maintenance and loss of biodiversity (climate change, habitat destruction); strategies for combatting threats to biodiversity; explore the inter-disciplinary nature of this field; introduce the key concepts of ecology relevant to conservation issues at the level of populations and ecosystems; unique capstone-position papers and stakeholder negotiation. (Given at Beaufort.) AP Bio, Biology 202L, suggested intro ecol, or instructor consent. Concurrent enrollment required in Environ 346A/Pubpol 246A
