Description of Internship or Research Opportunity: The Fort Johnson Summer Undergraduate Research Program is a 10-week internship that combines independent research with activities to promote career development and science communication skills. Ten interns will investigate diverse topics involving the response of marine organisms to environmental perturbation from the individual to ecosystem levels, using a variety of laboratory and field techniques. Interns will also engage in a science communication workshop series led weekly by Carolyn Sotka, an environmental writer and educator.
This NSF-supported Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program accommodates a wide range of student interests by involving mentors in research laboratories from five partners on the Fort Johnson marine sciences campus:
• Grice Marine Lab of the College of Charleston
• National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
• National Institute of Standards and Technology
• South Carolina Department of Natural Resources
• Medical University of South Carolina
Scholarships, Fellowships Associated with the Course: The program covers travel, housing, stipend, and research supplies.
