Purpose Statement:
MISSION STATEMENT: HIMB is the flagship institution for the University of Hawai‘i, the state of Hawai‘i, and the nation for the facilitation and support of multi-disciplinary research and education in all aspects of tropical marine biology. HIMB’s unique location on Moku o Lo‘e with ready access to estuarine, coastal and offshore environments promotes the integration of excellent laboratory science and rigorous field-work.
Facilities:
Facilities at the new, modern molecular biology laboratories include research vessels and skiffs, protected harbors, a pelagic fish laboratory; Hawaiian fish ponds, aquaria and tanks; a flow-through seawater system; remote environmental monitoring capabilities; reef microcosm systems; a wide array of computerized analytical and acoustic equipment; a floating marine mammal research complex; a functional genomics facility; and the Barbara Pauley Pagen Library and classrooms.
Research Program:
The Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) is a world-renowned research institute within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mânoa. Research at HIMB covers a broad range of topics including coral reef biology and ecology, the behavior physiology and sensory systems of marine mammals, tropical aquaculture, the behavior of reef fishes, shark ecology and sensory systems, fish endocrinology, pollution and management of marine ecosystems, coastal biogeochemical processes, fisheries, and bioengineering and genetics.
Academic Program:
ACADEMIC PROGRAM: HIMB faculty members serve on graduate committees for academic departments on the main campus in Zoology, Oceanography, Botany, Geography, Psychology, and Microbiology. They are also members of graduate academic programs in Ecology and Conservation Research Training, and Marine Biology. The faculty members are expected to develop outstanding graduate education programs that will afford students the opportunity to participate in all aspects of inter-disciplinary research. HIMB is also the site for the undergraduate UH Marine Biology intensive laboratory course.

Location:
HIMB is located on Moku o Lo‘e (Coconut Island) in Kâne‘ohe Bay on the NE coast of Oahu, and is just 15 miles from the main campus and downtown Honolulu. It is surrounded by 64 acres of coral reef, designated by the state of Hawai‘i as the Hawai‘i Marine Laboratory Refuge. Only researchers associated with HIMB are permitted to collect specimens from the refuge. The island itself covers approximately 29 acres, with 6 acres enclosed in lagoons that are used for keeping organisms in captivity for study.
