Purpose Statement:
"Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) is a totally ocean-oriented campus offering research, continuing education,public service and academic programs in marine science,engineering, business and transportation. It includes one of onlysix maritime training schools in the United States and the onlyone located on the Gulf of Mexico. TAMUG is a coastal campus of Texas A&M University in CollegeStation. In 1996, TAMUG was named the top liberal arts andsciences small college west of the Mississippi River by U. S.News and World Report ""Best Colleges"" issue. "Classrooms, laboratories, and meeting spaces are housed within12 major buildings on the Mitchell Campus. There are threeresidence halls, a swimming pool and tennis courts on campus.The Fitness Center is the preseason training facility for theHouston Rockets. The Jack K. Williams Library contains anoutstanding marine collection with over 44,000 books, 35,000bound volumes of journals, and a collection of charts and maps.The 393-foot Training Ship TEXAS CLIPPER II provides additionalclassroom, meeting and training space during the school year. TheCampus also houses a small fleet of training and researchvessels. "Faculty and student research at TAMUG emphasizes both basicand applied approaches to marine/maritime problems. Research isfocused on coastal/shelf processes, marine life studies, beachesand shores, offshore/deepwater studies, maritime policies andmanagement and marine geochemistry/toxicology.The Texas Institute of Oceanography supports marine research inTexas, manages regional federal projects and provides theresearch and technological base for the development ofmarine-related businesses in Texas and the Gulf. Other significant research programs include: the Institute of MarineLife Sciences, the Coastal Zone Laboratory, the Laboratory forOceanographic and Environmental Research, the Marine MammalResearch and Graduate Program, the Texas Center for Beachesand Shores, the Mathematical and Theoretical Chemistry Program. "Enrollment is approximately 1,300 students. Academic offeringsinclude:B. S. degrees in Marine Biology, Marine Fisheries, Marine Sciences(Oceanography), Marine Engineering Technology, MarineTransportation, Maritime Systems Engineering (ocean/civil engineering), and Maritime Administration (policy/business)the Corps of Cadets - licensing for deck and engineeringofficers in the U. S. Maritime Service. Students sail TEXASCLIPPER II each summer as part of trainingcooperative graduate degree programs, at both the masters anddoctorate level, with the departments of Oceanography, Biology,and Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at TAMU College Station"
Academic Program:
"TAMUG is located near the mouth of Galveston Bay with close access to the Gulf of Mexico. Galveston, with its historicaldistricts, theatres, and museums, provides an ideal backdropfor educational activities. The University has facilities atthree separate campus locations - the 130-acre Mitchell Campuson Pelican Island where most instructional programs are taught(with housing for 600+ students), the three-acre Ft. CrockettCampus on Galveston Island, and the 13-acre Offatts Bayou Campuswhere the Center for Marine Training and Safety is located. "
