Purpose Statement:
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) is dedicated to exploring the world's oceans, integrating the science and technology of the sea with the needs of humankind. We are involved in research and education in the marine sciences; biological, chemical, and environmental sciences; marine biomedical sciences; marine mammal conservation; aquaculture; and ocean engineering. We have a wide variety of educational programs and products to raise public awareness of the marine environment, illustrating how the health of our planet is inextricably linked to the state of our oceans. HBOI scientists are involved in a wide variety of research and conservation programs: to understand the life histories of deep sea marine species; to help improve the health of threatened and endangered marine mammals; to establish sustainable and environmentally responsible aquaculture techniques; to discover novel marine compounds that may hold the cure to human diseases like cancer; to educate the next generation of marine scientists and engineers; and to use sophisticated ship and submersible technologies to assess biodiversity and help us better understand our complex ocean ecosystems.
Facilities:
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, Inc. (HBOI) is one of the world's leading not-for-profit oceanographic research organizations dedicated to exploring the earth's oceans, estuaries and coastal regions, for the benefit of mankind. Located along the Indian River Lagoon in Fort Pierce, Florida, our 600-acre campus is home to dozens of premiere research and development facilities. HBOI employs over 250 scientists, technicians, and engineers, many of whom are leaders in their fields. We are one of the few organizations capable of planning and executing research operations, building the necessary instrumentation, taking it to the ocean depths anywhere on Earth in submersibles of our own design and construction, analyzing findings in our own labs, and finally sharing our hard-won knowledge with the world.
Research Program:
HBOI comprises seven divisions: The Aquaculture division conducts research and education programs addressing the culture of molluscs, crustaceans, marine ornamentals, food fish, seaweed, and biomedical species. Aquaculture development and service programs are in place to support industry expansion in Florida and around the world.Biomedical Marine Research addresses critical human healthproblems through chemical and biological research on marine organisms and their chemical constituents. Engineering R&D specialists are from all facets of the ocean community with decades of industrial, military, and academic experience in electrical, mechanical, ocean, optical, environmental and chemical engineering, naval architecture, instrumentation and film production comprise a uniquely powerful team. The Environmental Laboratory provides services for a wide range of needs including marine dredging support, sanitary landfill monitoring, potable and waste water analysis, pesticide residue testing and research on new technologies and method development projects. The team of scientists and staff provide research support to our other divisions as well as outside industry, government and academic research scientists. Marine Operations schedules, operates and maintains Harbor Branch's fleet of Research Vessels and Research Submersibles, as well as the PANTHER Rescue ROV. The Division is also responsible for the small boatmarina, which supports internal science use of smallboats on a daily basis for local studies and educationprograms. Marine Science is focused on identifying and understanding biological and physical phenomena in the marine environment, elucidating the ecological role of marine plants and animals and discovering their adaptations for life in the sea. Marine Mammal Research and Conservation has multifaceted biomedical research, education and conservation programs involving various marine mammal species around the world.
Academic Program:
The Marine Education and Conference Center offers a diverse menu of marine science programs (including field trips, camps, after school programs, courses, internships, and workshops) for students, teachers, and the general public. University-level education programming and professional training are offered as well. Additional education and training programs are offered through the various divisions. See the division web pages for more information.
