Purpose Statement:
Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute was founded in 1963 to "return to the sea some measure of the benefits derived from it." The Institute was rededicated in 1977 to honor world-renowned scientist Dr. Carl L. Hubbs.
Facilities:
From their 32,000 sq.ft. headquarters, Institute researchers are afforded immediate access tocoastal and off-shore research areas. The Institute maintains several small research vessels including inflatable water craft. The facility provides office and conference and auditorium rooms as well as laboratory space for ecological, physiological, anatomical and bioacoustics research. Space is also dedicated to educating the public as to the Institute's research work. A computer-controlled seawater system provides filtered seawater that is pumped on a flow-through basis from Mission Bay. Ample outside and inside space is dedicated to the holding of a wide range ofmarine organisms. The Institute also operates a 22,000 sq. ft. experimental hatchery and laboratory on land adjacent to Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, California. This facility is designed to support the mariculture of marine organisms as part of experiments in enhancement of depleted coastal fisheries. Seawater is pumped from the lagoon, filtered and then provided to various semi-open andflow-through culture systems. Institute research facilities are available to students and faculty from local universities through cooperative agreements.
Research Program:
The non-profit Institute is dedicated to studying the world's biota and natural resources, with emphasis on marine and coastal environments. The Institute: Conducts original research in the tradition of Carl and Laura Hubbs Disseminates the results to scientists and the public Applies the results toward improvement of the environment Encourages the study of animals in zoological parks and aquaria Trains new scientists and educators and promotes collaboration with colleagues from other countries
