Since 1966, the Shoals Marine Laboratory has provided an experiential education and research experience for undergraduate college students, advanced high school students and the public in general. The Lab's location on an offshore island allows students and researchers to literally immerse themselves in their studies away from outside distractions.

The Shoals Marine Lab has a seasonal facility on an offshore island, which includes laboratory buildings, a dining hall and dormatories. All students, faculty and staff live on the island during the course of their work or study. Located 6 miles offshore and accessible by boat only. The Lab operates two reseach vessels: the 47 foot John M. Kingsbury and the 36 foot John B. Heiser.

Research Internships in Field Science available to students. We also welcome Scientists from all over the country to come to the Isles of Shoals each summer to conduct research in many fields of marine science. SML offers up to 27 different credit courses (including three for high school students) and up to 6 different adult education programs, including two courses for families.

Faculty are drawn from the Lab's two parent institutions, Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire, as well as from institutions across North America and overseas.

Shoals Marine Lab is a seasonal facility located on 95 acre Appledore Island in the Isles of Shoals, off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire.
