Purpose Statement:
The mission of the Humboldt State University Telonicher Marine Laboratory is to provide a center for marine and environmental science teaching and research. The primary emphasis of the laboratory is teaching; however, student and faculty research is active. Additionally, the laboratory provides public displays which focus on interpretation of marine science and the marine environment. In teaching, research and public service roles, the laboratory is an integral part of the University.
Facilities:
The Humboldt State University Marine Lab occupies a 16,200 square foot building overlooking the Pacific Ocean, near Trinidad Bay and Trinidad Headland. It is well equipped for instruction and research in the marine sciences. Specialized facilities include a culture room for larval invertebrates and algae, and technical assistants with a complete shop for design and fabrication of experimental equipment.

In addition to the standard biological and oceanographic laboratory equipment, special equipment includes UV-Vis double beam spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatograph, Liquid Scintillation Counter, Laser Particle Analyzer, various research microscopes including phase interference, inverted, and polarizing, with digital still or video and 35mm photomicrography capabilities, video equipment, high speed refrigerated centrifuge, incubators, Ro-Tap sieve shakers, computer lab with T-1 line to the campus main frame and internet, pH meters, various analytical balances including an electro-balance and numerous other items.

The circulating seawater system supplies classrooms and numerous holding tanks ranging in size from 30 gallons to 1400 gallons.

Vessel capability at Humboldt State University ranges from a large blue water vessel, the 90 foot R/V Coral Sea to medium and small (16 to 24 foot) boats.

Research Program:
In addition to the teaching function, the laboratory provides a resource for student research projects which are required for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. During a typical year 75 to 100 faculty, graduate, undergraduate and visiting researchers will use the lab to carryout studies ranging from mariculture to sedimentology.

The Lab has the luxury of pumping ocean water directly from Trinidad Bay and into storage tanks. Before entering the lab it is pumped through sand filters and then chillers to keep it at a constant temperature.

Academic Program:
Between five and ten university classes are taught each semester at the Laboratory, principally from the academic departments of Biological Sciences, Fisheries Biology, and Oceanography.

A series of diver training courses are offered in support of the Marine Science curricula. These diver training classes provide the systematic and thorough development of requisite technical and open water diver skills. Students progress from basic SCUBA skills, through advanced Certification and then to Research Diver Training. Each training class offers a Humboldt State University Diver Certification and a National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) Certification.

Location:
The Humboldt State University Marine Laboratory is located 285 miles north of San Francisco in an area of rocky coastlines and towering redwoods. The Laboratory is located in the small coastal town of Trinidad, just 14 miles north of the Humboldt State University main campus and 20 miles south of Redwood National Park. The Laboratory is situated in close proximity to rocky coastlines, quietbays and lagoons, salt marshes, sandy beaches and estuarine sloughs. The climate is maritime, with cool wet winters and warmer dry summers with regular coastal fog.
Research Vessel
The R/V Coral Sea is a fully equipped oceanographic vessel and is available for outside contract research. See the vessel web page for more information.
