The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) at University of Oregon invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Laboratory Technician 2.
OIMB is located in Charleston, Oregon, near Coos Bay.
This position works a flexible work schedule. The nature of the job may require irregular hours, such as to meet a tide or execute a timed step in a procedure. Position may require occasional weekend work.
This is a classified position represented by SEIU local 503, Oregon Public Employees Union.

TO QUALIFY YOU MUST HAVE:

Two years of experience performing routine, standardized analytical tests and laboratory procedures in accordance with well-defined written instructions and high school courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or any course which included laboratory work; OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience.
NOTE: An Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science may substitute for one year of the required experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

Familiarity with essential laboratory chemistry and basic techniques in molecular biology (bacteriology, cloning, PCR, etc.).
Experience with saltwater aquaria and marine invertebrates.
Experience with standard laboratory record-keeping and sample handling.
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with environmental and multiplex PCR.
Experience in the use of bioinformatic resources for sequence analysis.
Experience with invertebrate embryology and larval culture.
Familiarity with plankton sampling methods and larval types.
Light microscopy.
Position is subject to a criminal background check.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Laboratory maintenance: care of algal cultures and marine animals in aquaria; ordering and organizing supplies and common use reagents; sample organization and inventory; media prep, autoclaving, etc.
Routine Molecular Biology Research: Assisting researcher with mini preps, RNA synthesis, DNA extraction, etc. on a regular basis at the demand of the research.
Routine Research Laboratory Support: Includes processing PCR and sequence analysis of environment samples, PCR-based recombinant construct assembly, transgene construction, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Although most of the work will take place in a laboratory, the position will likely involve field collecting in the intertidal or by boat, and some plankton sampling.
