Diving Safety Officer

Position Description: The Florida State University (FSU) seeks a highly motivated and organized individual to serve as the diving safety officer (DSO). The successful candidate will have oversight over all compressed gas diving at the University, following the standards for scientific diving set by the American Academy of Underwater Sciences. The DSO is expected to ensure that high quality research using compressed air diving is carried out safely and at a reasonable cost.

The position is located at the FSU Coastal & Marine Laboratory, St. Teresa, FL, 45-miles from the main Tallahassee campus, and reports to the Facilities Director. The FSUCML mission is to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research focused on the coastal and marine ecosystems of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, to help solve the ecological problems faced by the region and provide the scientific underpinnings for informed policy decisions.

Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited:

Serving as the Diving Safety Officer and manager of the FSU Academic Diving Program
Managing, preparing and performing maintenance on all dive gear and equipment
Interacting with the scientists to help carry out the scientific objectives of the diving operations safely and efficiently.
Participating, on occasion, in fieldwork that includes conducting research dives.


Qualifications:

Minimum education - Bachelor's Degree in marine or related science and at least three years of relevant experience.
Certification as a diving instructor by a nationally recognized diving agency (e.g., NAUI, PADI) with sufficient experience consistent with the AAUS Diving Officer Competency Profile (see below) to serve as the university DSO.
Experience teaching compressed-gas diving, rescue diving, and other courses.
Experience in diving-supervision and diving related safety.
Proficiency in dive gear and equipment repair and maintenance.
Ability to establish and maintain various record-keeping systems and to complete appropriate documentation, logs, inventory, and reports.
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to manage a variety of operations simultaneously, provide leadership, and effectively deal with problems as they arise.
Proficiency in computer applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and others.

Special Requirements

Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening, SCUBA dive physical, and background check
Successful completion of swim and SCUBA skills evaluation
Must have the physical strength to lift up to 60 pounds overhead with ease; remain on feet for long periods of time; climb stairs, bend, stoop; and readily enter and exit the water in scuba gear from small boats.
