Position Description: The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is seeking an instructor for the Marine Invertebrate Zoology (MIZ) course and the Marine Biology and Oceanographic Research (MBOR) course offered in the 2016 Fall Semester Program. MIZ is offered in the first 10 weeks, and MBOR is offered in the final 4 weeks, of the Semester Program. (http://www.bios.edu/education/fall-semester/ )

BIOS is situated at the northern edge of the subtropical climate zone, with easy access to a great variety of marine habitats that are accessible year round for scientific research and education. Education programs at BIOS offer university students the opportunity to gain practical scientific experience, academic credit at their home institution through course participation, and to become fully immersed in a residential community of researchers and students. Education programs benefit from BIOS’s on-campus housing, dining facilities, lecture rooms, teaching labs, plus a small boats and diving facility.

The Fall Semester Program at BIOS, established in 2000, is a 14-week program offered in partnership with the University of Rhode Island and Roger Williams University. However, students from other universities may apply to this program. Three courses run concurrently for the first 10 weeks of the Program: Coral Reef Ecology (2 days/week), Marine Invertebrate Zoology (2 days/week), and Research Diving Methods (1 day/week). The Marine Biology and Oceanographic Research course, which runs for the final 4 weeks of the Program, allows students to undertake an independent research project supervised by the instructors.

The Marine Invertebrate Zoology course has a well-established syllabus and accompanying instruction materials but there is sufficient flexibility to accommodate the successful candidate’s areas of expertise. The student projects that comprise the Marine Biology and Oceanographic Research course reflect the students’ interests and the diversity of instructors’ research experience.

The successful candidate will be post-doctorate and will have extensive knowledge of the diversity and ecology of marine invertebrates and be able to present animal diversity from a phylogenetic perspective. Previous experience in teaching undergraduate marine field courses is required. Experience supervising undergraduate research projects, as well as working or teaching in tropical or semi-tropical environments, including coral reefs, mangrove forests and seagrass beds, are assets.

This is a contract position for the 2016 Fall Semester Program only. Salary will be based on the courses’ teaching days, the BIOS salary scale and will be commensurate with experience. Return airfare to/from Bermuda and on-campus accommodation (up to a defined maximum) will be provided by BIOS. Health insurance coverage is the responsibility of the individual.
