Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Urban Sustainability

Position Description: With 80% of the US population currently living in urban areas, cities must function in such a way as to maintain the ecosystems that supply the needs of their populations. Three areas of primary concern in creating sustainable cities are: energy, food, and infrastructure (including transportation, green building, planning, and social sustainability).

The Department of Environmental Studies at UNCW is seeking to hire a tenure-track position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor rank in Urban Sustainability. Start date is August 2016. The position will be responsible for developing and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in urban sustainability and related areas, as well as supporting the current environmental studies curriculum. The Department seeks a candidate whose expertise includes one or more of the following three subject areas within the urban sustainability framework: energy, agriculture, and infrastructure. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of the policies and practices relevant to their area of expertise as well as an understanding for how sustainability theory relates to preserving natural systems.

Candidates with both practical and academic expertise in urban sustainability are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have a strong commitment to teaching and working in an interdisciplinary academic context.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in an appropriate sustainability-related field completed by the start date and demonstrate the ability to generate externally funded research.

UNCW is located five miles from the Atlantic Ocean on a beautiful 656-acre campus in the historic port city of Wilmington on the Cape Fear River.
