Position Description: Duke University, one of the world’s finest research universities and a leader in interdisciplinary innovation and global engagement, invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Duke University Marine Laboratory (DUML).

The Duke University Marine Lab, a coastal campus in Beaufort, NC within Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE), has a distinguished record of research and education in marine science, conservation and governance, and a strong international reputation. The mission of the laboratory is to be at the forefront of understanding marine environmental systems, their conservation, and governance through leadership in research, training and communication. Research interests span diverse taxa and include both human and natural systems.

The Director will strengthen and explore potential new connections across the University. Rich opportunities exist to initiate and enhance partnerships with programs across the Durham campus, including the Sanford School of Public Policy, Pratt School of Engineering, School of Medicine, and disciplinary departments within Arts and Sciences that span the biological, physical, and social sciences. Working with a supportive Provost and NSOE Dean, this Director will engage the faculty in a strategic visioning exercise that will preserve the culture and identity of the Marine Lab, and the superb student experience it provides, while stabilizing undergraduate enrollment and increasing the Lab’s academic impacts.

Candidates for the Director position are expected to possess a sustained record of scholarly excellence in an area relevant to DUML’s mission and outstanding leadership skills. The successful candidate will have a faculty appointment in the Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE) and may serve as Chair of NSOE’s Division of Marine Science and Conservation. Duke is seeking an individual with a strong record of leadership, experience in administration, a compelling vision for the next phase in DUML’s development, and a desire to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment that blends scholarship, education and service to a wide variety of stakeholders. A record of successful fundraising is highly desirable, as the Director will need to engage in fundraising efforts on behalf of both DUML and NSOE.
