Course Description: OC 499/599. STATISTICAL ANALYSES FOR OCEANOGRAPHIC AND FISHERIES DATA USING R (3 credits).
This course is designed to familiarize students with data mining, visualization, and the most commonly used statistical analyses in fisheries oceanography and other marine sciences. Students will be taught to program in R statistical programming language. Topics include: visualization and quantification of spatial patterns, introduction to time series analysis, linear regression models, analysis of the variance, multivariate analysis, and introduction to nonlinear and mixed effect models. The course will consist of short introductory lectures of each method and its programming using pre-exercises during computer lab sessions. The computer laboratory exercises will train students in the design and statistical analysis of fisheries and ecological research. The methods and techniques will be presented in the context of fundamental research in fisheries oceanography, such as environmental influence in the abundance or catch distribution, spatial scales of oceanographic processes, factors influencing survival of early life stages and recruitment, etc. The cases of studies for developing programming skills will use open access databases and published research. Students will also have an opportunity to work on a final project using their own set of data. Prerequisites: A primary learning goal for students is to understand and develop computer codes. Therefore, we will not cover in depth mathematical and statistical theories. However, it will be very advantageous to have familiarity with math and statistical notation and basic scripting language. Specifically, introductory Calculus, Statistics, and Probability courses and/or permission from instructor.
